Are Electric Toothbrushes Better than Manual Ones?

Manual and electric toothbrushes have long been debated. Do you know if there is one better than the other? Our patients want to know, and Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA intends to lay out the facts.

When it comes to dental care, some of us want to make sure we are getting the best products. Since electric toothbrushes were invented, there has been debate about whether or not they can clean teeth better than manual toothbrushes. It turns out that it really depends on the person using it.

Generally, manual toothbrushes and electric toothbrushes do the same job cleaning teeth. However, if you are someone who has difficulty using your hands, like someone with arthritis, an electric toothbrush may be the better option. This is because electric toothbrushes do most of the work. You really just need to hold them in the right position. In addition, electric toothbrushes usually have thicker handles than manual ones; making them easier to hold. This may make it easier for certain patients to do a good job cleaning.

When it comes to dental care, there is no doubt a good home hygiene routine is essential. To learn more about healthy oral hygiene routines, contact Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA by calling (909) 987-6268 or by visiting our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Brush for a Full Two Minutes

Brushing for two minutes allows you enough time to hit all the spots you should be cleaning in your mouth. However, many patients do not spend enough time brushing. Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA wants to give our patients tips for getting a full two minutes in.

When brushing, you need to make sure you hit all the surfaces of the teeth including the insides, the fronts, the chewing surfaces, and the backs of the back molars. In addition, you should be brushing your tongue, the insides of your cheeks, and the roof of your mouth. These are places where bacteria can collect. Hitting all of these spots carefully should take you about two minutes.

A fun way of keeping track of the two minutes is to turn on your favorite song. Many music players have counters on them, just look for the two minute mark! Another great, visual way is to set up an hour glass, or in this case, a minute glass. Just remember to turn it over a second time for the full two minutes.

Splitting the mouth into four sections is also a good way to break up the minutes. Spend thirty seconds on the upper-right section, thirty seconds on the upper-left section, and so on for the two lower sections.

Good oral care yields healthy teeth and gums. To schedule a cleaning at Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA, call our office at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Taking Care of your New Dental Crown

With any dental procedure or restoration, there will be some healing time. When a crown is placed, there are some special instructions you should follow in order to allow healthy and quick healing. At Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA, we want our patients to be aware of these instructions.

When having a crown installed, you will first wear a temporary crown. This is to protect the area and allow use of the tooth while the custom crown is being created at a dental laboratory. These temporary crowns are not cemented in permanently, so you will need to be careful so it does not pop off. When brushing, be gentle on and around the crown. When flossing, do not pull up; instead move the floss back and forth while gently moving upwards.

When the permanent crown is cemented into place, the soft tissue will need to get used to the new crown. There may be swelling and slight irritation. As the tissue heals, this will go away. In the meantime, you can use ibuprofen or a warm salt water rinse to help with any pain.

It will take some time, but eventually your crown will start to feel like one of your own teeth. For more information about dental crowns, contact Alta Loma Dental Center of Alta Loma, CA by calling (909) 987-6268 or by visiting our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

How to Keep Good Oral Habits

There are some habits that are easy to fall into and others that take some work. When it comes to dental hygiene, it can sometimes be difficult to stick to a good routine. At Alta Loma Dental Care here in Alta Loma, CA, we want to give our patients tips for creating good oral habits and sticking to them!

Take Baby Steps

Taking on an entirely new habit at once can sometimes be so overwhelming, you do not know where to start or it looks like too large of a task. This is when you need to break the new task into baby steps. For instance, if you want to start cleaning your tongue every time you brush your teeth, start with only one stroke each time you brush. Eventually make it two strokes and then you will find it easy to just keep brushing until it is clean.

Be Realistic

Be realistic about your goals. If you want to brush more often to whiten your teeth, understand that it will take some time for surface stains to lift. Being realistic means that you know the work will be worth it, but you will not gain instant results. It also means that you may not be able to take on major changes all at once. (See the first tip).

Remind Yourself

Simple reminders give you that extra nudge to complete a task. If you want to floss every night before bed, put a sticky-note on your bathroom mirror that reminds you to floss. Another idea is to leave the floss out on your counter top so you actually see it every night.

It is healthy to create new goals and standards, especially when it comes to your health. To learn more about Alta Loma Dental Care, contact us by calling our Alta Loma, CA office at (909) 987-6268 or by visiting our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Healthy Food for Teeth

Along with brushing and flossing, there are other ways to take care of your teeth- like eating. It is true; there are certain foods that are actually good for your teeth. At Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA, we want our patients to be well-rounded in oral health. That is why we are going to talk about some of the foods to choose that will benefit your teeth and gums!

By now, most of us have probably heard that milk is great for strong bones. Well, the same goes for teeth. Calcium in milk keeps teeth strong and healthy. In addition, milk lowers the levels of acid in your mouth, further protecting teeth and gums. Cheese yields similar results.

Crunchy foods like cucumbers and apples help clean teeth as you eat them. The fibrous foods scrape against your teeth and remove plaque!

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are great for your gums. They strengthen blood vessels and connective tissues that hold your teeth to your jaw. They also reduce inflammation.

Foods that contain polyphenols like cranberries and tea prevent plaque from growing and sticking to teeth. This lowers the risk of cavities.

When looking for food that will benefit teeth, it is good to look for vitamin-rich foods and foods that promote saliva flow. Keeping a moist mouth is important for keeping bacteria levels down. To schedule an appointment with Alta Loma Dental Care in our Alta Loma, CA dental practice, give our office a call at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

How to Brush and Floss with Braces

When wearing braces, you must take a little more time brushing and flossing to avoid stains and cavities. At Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA, we want all of our patients to know the proper ways to brush and floss. This is why we want to remind our patients who wear braces of how to take good oral care at home.

Brushing while wearing braces is a little different than brushing without them. You now have brackets that can collect plaque and wires to be careful with. Brushing with braces takes a little extra time, but the effort is worth it. Nobody wants to deal with awkward staining or decay after their braces are taken off. They should be enjoying their beautiful smile!

To brush well, you need to make sure you are first brushing normally, and then brushing around your brackets. Brush along the tops and bottoms of your brackets with your toothbrush. To brush the sides of your brackets under the wires, use an interdental toothbrush. These are available where most stores sell dental supplies and look like teeny trees.

To floss, invest in Superfloss or a floss threader. This will make flossing much easier by getting under your wires smoothly. Flossing is still very important, as cavities are most likely to occur between teeth.

Proper home care, along with routine dental visits will ensure a healthy and beautiful smile when those braces come off. To schedule an appointment with us at Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA, give us a call at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Calming Kids' Dental Fears

When kids are afraid of going to the dentist, it can be a hassle getting them there smoothly. Not to mention, your child is experiencing fear, which is something no one wants to see their child go through. Here at Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA, we strive to make dental visits a comfortable experience for anyone. However, we do have some tips for calming your child’s dental fears.

Play Dentist at Home

By playing “dentist” at home, your child will feel more comfortable in our office. Try having them lean back in a chair while you count their teeth. This will help them know what to expect.

The Earlier, the Better

Kids should start seeing the dentist as soon as they grow in their first tooth. However, if they have not grown in their first tooth by the age of one, that is also a good time to bring them in. Starting early will also help your child feel more familiar with dentists and dental procedures.

Rewards and Praise

Giving your child praise or a reward after good behavior at a dental appointment is a good way to show positive reinforcement. Take them to a park, let them pick a movie to see, or make their favorite dinner. Just be careful not to offer the reward before the appointment. This may have the opposite effect, as your child may then think there is something to be afraid of.

Through good planning and reassuring words, your child can become familiar with dental visits and see them as no big deal. To schedule your family’s dental visit, call Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

How to Have a Happy and Healthy Halloween

Halloween is that fun-filled time of the year where the air is crisp, the leaves are crunchy, and there is cavity-causing candy galore! Do not get us wrong, Halloween should be enjoyed by everyone! However, at Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA, we want to advise our patients on how to have a safe and healthy Halloween, along with a fun one!

The candy we trick-or-treat for and load up our door steps with is filled with sugar that can cause cavities. In addition, the sour candies can cause additional wear-down of our enamel. In order to make it past Halloween with a healthy mouth, you need to make sure you are brushing and flossing extra-well. Pay attention to timing, too. The acid that is in candy (especially sour candy) can soften the enamel on our teeth. So when we brush our teeth right after eating, it can wear down enamel. Wait at least thirty minutes after eating before brushing.

Another tip for a safe Halloween is avoiding the candies that will not work well with your mouth. For instance, if you have a weak tooth, avoid hard candies that you may be tempted to bite down on. If you have a recent filling or a loose crown, stay away from sticky candies like taffy and caramel.

Always remember to floss! Following these tips, you are sure to have a happy and healthy Halloween. To schedule a cleaning with Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA, give our office a call at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Pregnancy and How it Affects Oral Health

During pregnancy, you are no longer just taking steps to take care of your own body, but the body of your baby, as well. Oral care is very important for a healthy body system. The doctors of Alta Loma Dental Care here in Alta Loma, CA want our patients to know how pregnancy affects oral health and what changes need to be made to take good care of it.

During pregnancy, visits to the dentist for cleanings and examinations should become more frequent. There should also be more attention paid to home oral care. The change in hormones during pregnancy makes gum tissue more sensitive to plaque and tartar. They can become red, puffy, and bleed more easily. This is a condition known is pregnancy gingivitis. After the baby is born, hormones should return to normal and relieve sensitive gums, however, it is still important to keep gingivitis at bay. Pregnancy gingivitis can still turn into a more serious gum disease. Irritated gums can also form pregnancy tumors. These are benign lumps on the gum tissue that will clear up after the baby is born, but they can be irritating enough to need to be removed sooner.

To avoid irritating gums, make sure to brush in the morning, before bed, and thirty minutes after every meal. In addition, talk to your dentist about increasing dental cleanings and examinations.

We are invested in your health throughout all stages of life. To schedule an appointment with us in our Alta Loma, CA practice, call us at (909) 987-6268 or visit the Alta Loma Dental Care website, www.altalomadentalcare.com.

Choosing Safe and Effective Toothpaste

Choosing toothpaste may seem like a simple task but choosing the right one can help out your oral health by a lot. There are different toothpastes for different oral needs. Here at Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA, we are committed to helping our patients find the products that benefit their oral care the best.

There is toothpaste for sensitive teeth, tartar control, whitening, fresh breath, and more. While choosing between these different toothpastes, there are certain ingredients you want to look out for. There are some elements that can help your teeth and some that can harm.

For whitening and tartar control, there is an abrasive agent added to the toothpaste that helps polish away stains and reduce tartar build up. However, too much of this ingredient can actually harm teeth by wearing down the enamel. You want to be sure your toothpaste has a safe level of the abrasives.

For sensitive teeth, toothpaste with potassium nitrate and strontium chloride are great. These help desensitize the nerves that create sensitivity.

For fresh breath, there are toothpastes that have added ingredients that fight the bad breath bacteria. Look for antibacterial toothpaste.

For kids, choosing toothpaste that has a fun flavor might actually get them excited about brushing! There are tons of options that are both effective and fun.

Looking for the American Dental Association’s seal of acceptance will ensure you are choosing safe and effective toothpaste!

Foods and Drinks to Beat Bad Breath

When it comes to fresh breath, we all know it can be hard to keep. Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA wants our patients to know how to avoid bad breath and how to fight it when it appears. Along with a good oral hygiene routine, there are foods and drinks that help battle bad breath.

Foods with vitamin C are great at killing the bacteria that reside in your mouth. Fruits like oranges, melons, and berries are high in vitamin C. They are also healthy to eat and they taste great!

Fresh herbs like mint, parsley, basil, and cilantro freshen up breath when you chew on them. They also contain chlorophyll which neutralizes odors; so these herbs work both in the short term and the long term! Another odor neutralizer is green tea. Replace coffee or soda pop with green tea. It works to kill stinky bacteria, plus it hydrates you; vital for keeping bad breath away.

One more way to fight the bacteria that cause bad breath is… more bacteria. It’s true! Eating probiotic yogurt without added sugar is great because it contains active bacteria cultures that fight the bad breath bacteria. Just be sure there is no added sugar as that will create a feeding ground for the bad bacteria.

The right foods and drinks along with great oral care do a great job at deterring bad breath. However, if you are still struggling, it may be a sign of a condition that needs more attention, like gum disease. Options for Tooth Restoration in Alta Loma, CA

When teeth are weakened or injured, they can be painful and can make eating difficult. Not to mention they affect the look of a smile. At Alta Loma Dental Care, we have multiple options for tooth restoration here in our Alta Loma, CA dental practice.

Dental inlays and onlays are great for when there is a small amount of damage to the chewing surface of a tooth. Inlays repair the chewing surface in between the four cusps of a tooth. Onlays repair the chewing area plus one or more cusp. Inlays and onlays are often referred to as partial crowns because they are the same concept, but they are for when the tooth is sustaining less damage.

Full dental crowns are also available in our Alta Loma, CA office. These are caps that go on the tooth to replace the whole upper and outer portion of the tooth. Crowns are for when teeth are damaged or decayed, but still have a healthy tooth root.

Dental bonding is available to fix cracks, chips, and decay. It is a composite resin that is tooth colored so it blends in with the natural tooth. It is shaped and smoothed over the problem and hardened for durability.inlaysonlays.jpg

If you have weakened teeth it is time to bring them back to their former strength so they can last for a long time. To find out more or to schedule an appointment, call Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Making Dental Care Fun for Kids

Great dental care can be difficult to instill into a child. Some kids may find it boring or may not understand the importance of it. At Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA, we know that healthy adult teeth start with healthy baby teeth. We want to inform parents of how they can make dental care fun for kids.

To help kids understand why brushing and flossing is so important, let them watch a fun video that explains it. There are a lot of great videos on the internet that are both informative and fun. When kids understand why they are taking care of their teeth, they will be more interested in doing it.

Make the actual tooth brushing fun! You can do this by picking a fun toothbrush with their favorite character and a toothpaste flavor they enjoy. This works great for flossing, too, as there are tons of different flavors. Toothbrushes that play music not only make the task exciting, but they make sure that kids brush for a full two minutes. Other ways of keeping time like flipping an hourglass are fun for kids, too.iStock_000009824569XSmall.jpg

A reward system is another great way to encourage kids to brush and floss. Just a simple bedtime story afterwards or a star sticker will get kids to want to brush their teeth.

Proper dental care is crucial for kids of all ages, whether they have adult teeth or baby teeth. To schedule a cleaning with Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA, call us at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Reduce the Bacteria in Your Mouth with Laser Therapy

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that starts out as plaque – an opaque film on the teeth that hardens to form calculus or tartar. As tartar accumulates, it harbors bacteria which attack the soft tissue around the gums. This early stage of gum disease is called Gingivitis. Here at Alta Loma Dental Care, Dr. Kim can address the underlying infection that causes it with a procedure called Laser Bacterial Reduction (LBR).

With laser treatment there are many reported benefits such as, a reduced need for local anesthesia, minimal bleeding, and swelling is controlled with minimal discomfort. Laser light energy is used to vaporize the bacteria and infected tissue in the deepened gum pocket. This procedure is painless, takes less than 10 minutes and reduces the bacteria around your gums from billions to hundreds. Dr. Kim recommends that all of our patients have their teeth decontaminated prior to cleaning appointments.

Zap Away Your Canker Sores with Laser Treatment

When a canker sore emerges, you might find yourself running to the drugstore for Anbesol or any other numbing agent that will temporarily reduce the pain. You may also find yourself Googling every home remedy you can find to control the situation. Here at Alta Loma Dental Care, we are excited to introduce laser treatment of apthous ulcers (canker sores) and Herpes (cold sores), which promote reduced healing times.

Essentially, a canker sore is a small lesion/ulcer inside the mouth. They can appear almost anywhere in the mouth – the inner surface of the cheeks, and lips; the tongue; the soft palate; and the base of the gums. They can be rather painful, and can be caused by a stress, dietary deficiencies and triggered by citrus fruits. Laser treatment has several remedial effects on canker sores. Laser treatment stops the progression of sores so that they take a significantly shorter time to heal. It also results in rapid pain relief. Additionally, laser treatment can be preventative. Before a canker sore breakout, the lips will invariably start to tingle. Receiving laser treatment at this early stage will help stop the breakout in its tracks.

What is the Purpose of Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens, or early twenties. During this “age of wisdom” phase, sometimes teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often they are misaligned and require removal. Some might think of wisdom teeth as spare tires, because if you lost your teeth, the wisdom teeth would be extra teeth that come in and function like normal teeth. Here at Alta Loma Dental Care Dr. Kim can perform extractions depending on their position and stage of development.

So why do we have them? Anthropologists believe wisdom teeth or the third set of molars, were the evolutionary answer to our ancestor’s early diet of coarse, rough food – like leaves, roots, nuts and meats – which required more chewing power and resulted in excessive wear of the teeth. The modern diet with its softer foods, along with marvels of modern technologies such as forks, spoons and knives, has made the need for wisdom teeth nonexistent; however, they don’t always need to be removed.

Straight Teeth are Healthy Teeth

Benefits of having properly aligned teeth extend far beyond a confident smile. According to the American Dental Association, straightening your teeth can significantly affect your overall dental health. Straightening your smile could hardly be perfect if it’s not a healthy one and here at Alta Loma Dental Care we provide Six Month Smiles and Invisalign options to help get you started.

Swollen red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. Unfortunately, these are also signs of periodontal disease. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against periodontal problems. When teeth are crooked, extra pressure is placed on just a few teeth when the forces of chewing should be equally distributed between all of the teeth. In addition, smiles can be misaligned to the degree where individual teeth may be completely out of place behind or in front of other teeth, which can cause daily cleaning problems. Plaque left behind after brushing and flossing begins to turn into tartar within 24 hours and this tartar cannot be removed with a toothbrush.

The Effects of Poor Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is important for the health of your teeth, your gums, and your overall health. At Alta Loma Dental Care here in Alta Loma, CA, we strive to inform our patients of proper oral care and why it is important. We want our patients to know the consequences of having poor oral hygiene.

When brushing is not performed two to three times per day, plaque sits on teeth and can weaken the enamel. This makes them susceptible to cavities. When plaque is not brushed off of teeth at all, not only is decay possible, but the plaque can actually form crystals that harden the plaque. The plaque then turns into tartar, which is only able to be removed by a dentist. Plaque and tartar decay the teeth and also irritate the gums. When the gums become diseased, they form deep pockets and recede. This allows bacteria to enter the gums deep down by the root of the tooth. A scaling and planing is needed to remove the bacteria and clear up the gum disease. Gum disease is painful, irritating, and can cause bad breath. Not to mention, it is not very aesthetically pleasing. If left untreated, it will lead to loss of the teeth.

Brushing two to three times per day and flossing once per day is all that is needed to remove plaque. For more information about oral hygiene, call Alta Loma Dental Care or schedule an appointment at our Alta Loma, CA dental practice. Call us at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Why it is Important to Replace Missing Teeth

Replacing a missing tooth is important for more than the aesthetics of your smile. Replacing a missing tooth can be vital to your jaw structure and your other teeth. Here at Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA, we want our patients to understand the importance of tooth replacement and what options they have.

When a tooth is lost, the bone tissue in the area of the jaw begins to deteriorate. This changes the shape of the jaw. If multiple teeth are missing, this can actually end up changing the shape of the facial structure. When there is a space where a tooth used to be, the other teeth begin to shift towards that opening. This can create a change in how the teeth connect while chewing and biting. It also creates gaps between the other teeth that can become hard-to-reach places for a toothbrush. Bacteria can build up and cause decay and gum disease.

For tooth replacement, we want to give our patients options. Alta Loma Dental Care offers dental implants, dental bridges, and dentures. Dentures, the removable option, are available in full and partial sets. They can be placed immediately or conventionally.

To learn about your options for tooth replacement, call us at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com. Schedule a consultation with Alta Loma Dental Care in our Alta Loma, CA dental practice to find out which option is best for you.

Brushing Up on Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth is important to remove cavity-causing plaque and other debris. It is something we have been doing our whole life, but have you really ever had a lesson in brushing your teeth? Here at Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA, we want to make sure our patients are getting the most out of their brushing.

It is important to brush your teeth for a full two minutes two to three times per day. Plaque builds up just hours after brushing, so two to three times per day is vital for clean and strong teeth. A great way to make sure you get a balanced brushing is to split your mouth into four sections and brush each section for thirty seconds. Also make sure to brush the insides of your cheeks, the roof of your mouth, and your tongue, because bacteria collect in these places, as well.

The best way to reach all of the plaque along your gum line is to brush in an up-and-down motion. Short strokes are best to scrub the whole tooth. Brush every surface of the teeth; the insides, outsides, chewing surfaces, and the backs of your back molars.

In addition to brushing two to three times per day, flossing should be performed once per day. To schedule a cleaning here in our Alta Loma, CA dental practice, call us at (909) 987-6268 or visit the Alta Loma Dental Care website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

How to Avoid Staining Teeth

Bold and bright teeth are a large part of self-confidence. Whitening teeth has become very popular, but there are steps you can take to avoid staining. Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA wants our patients to know how to avoid staining teeth and how to keep those pearly whites bright!

An important step in avoiding stains is knowing how they happen. There are surface stains and there are stains that penetrate the surface and reach the dentin. The dentin is the main bulk of the tooth, located in the center of the tooth. When surface stains reach the dentin, it discolors the whole tooth.

To avoid keeping surface stains trapped on your teeth, brushing is the most important thing you can do. Plaque is a sticky film that can trap food and drink particles close to your enamel. Brushing two to three times per day will ensure that any stain-causing debris will not be around for long. Flossing daily is also important for removing stain-holding plaque.

Rinsing your mouth after consuming dark foods and liquids will help keep them from clinging to your teeth. Foods like blueberries, soy sauce, and tomato sauce are common stain-causers. Drinks like cola, coffee, and red wine are also stain-causers. Another good way to avoid stains from dark drinks is to drink them through a straw to limit contact.

Along with these tips, our customized teeth whitening trays can give your teeth a kick start to a brighter smile. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity and How Can It Be Stopped?

Tooth sensitivity can be painful and can keep you from enjoying the foods and drinks you love. At Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA, we strive to fight tooth sensitivity, which is why we want to provide information about why it happens how to minimize it.

Tooth sensitivity can be the result of many conditions. The pain you feel happens when your gums expose then dentin. Dentin makes up the inside of a tooth and the roots. It has tubes that lead to the pulp, which is the nerve center of the tooth. Damage to a tooth, from decay, worn enamel, teeth grinding, or fractures can cause sensitive teeth. Whitening products, age, acidic foods, and plaque build-up are all conditions that can cause a sensitive tooth. To reverse this, you must reverse the habit that is causing the irritation.

To keep teeth and gums clean, brushing and flossing every day is a must. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush will also make sure you are not harming gums and will make sure you are not wearing down your enamel. Toothpaste with fluoride in it will help strengthen enamel. Avoid highly acidic foods and drinks. It is also important to remember to wait at least thirty minutes after eating to brush your teeth, as the acid from foods can wear down enamel when brushed right after.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, schedule an appointment with Alta Loma Dental Care in our Alta Loma, CA location for an examination. To schedule, call (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com.

Tips for Choosing the Right Toothbrush

Walking through the toothbrush aisle, there are so many options. So how do we know which toothbrush is right? Alta Loma Dental Care wants to help our patients in the Alta Loma, CA area pick the best toothbrush for their oral care.

The most noticeable difference between all of these toothbrushes in the aisle is that some of them are electric and some are manual. Studies have shown that manual toothbrushes can do just as good of a job at brushing teeth as an electric toothbrush. However, for electric toothbrushes do most of the work. So for those with difficulty using their hands, an electric toothbrush may allow them to get a better brushing. Toothbrushes with non-slip grips are also a good idea.

Choose a toothbrush with a small head. Smaller heads are easier to maneuver throughout your mouth so you can reach every surface. The bristles on the head should be soft, for the best plaque removal and least irritation to gums. However, do not choose a toothbrush that says soft on the packaging unless directed by your dentist. Instead, choose one that says medium. Bristles that are too stiff can irritate gums and cause bleeding.

Multiple Options for Tooth Replacement at Alta Loma Dental Care

When considering tooth replacement, it is nice to have options. Here at Alta Loma Dental Care, we have several options for our patients in the Alta Loma, CA area looking to replace teeth.

Dental bridges are a popular solution for a missing tooth. They can be affixed for missing teeth anywhere in the mouth and can be made with porcelain to match your natural teeth. A bridge is applied by reshaping the adjacent teeth (or tooth) to fit crowns. The crowns are then cemented into place with the full replacement tooth in the middle, or on the end if there is only one adjacent tooth. With good care, a dental bridge can last for over fifteen years.

Here at Alta Loma Dental Care, we also offer our patients full and partial dentures. The dentures are custom made to create the best smile for you. Dentures are a removable option. For full dentures, we can place them immediately or conventionally. Partial dentures are similar to bridges, but are able to be taken out.

Another option for replacement is the dental implant. This is a permanent solution, so with good care, a dental implant can last a lifetime. They are custom made to blend in with the rest of your teeth and they will act just like a natural tooth. Implants are surgically inserted to bond with the jawbone.

If you are in need of a tooth replacement, schedule a consultation at Alta Loma Dental Center of Alta Loma, CA so we can find the best option for you. To schedule, call us at (909) 987-6268 or visit our website, www.altalomadentalcare.com

Flossing Tips from Alta Loma Dental Care

Flossing should be done every day to prevent tartar build-up and cavities. Alta Loma Dental Care of Alta Loma, CA wants to provide a flossing guide to their patients.

Food and other debris becomes stuck between the teeth and when left there, the film of bacteria, called plaque, can turn into a hardened mineral deposit called tartar. As we know, plaque and tartar can affect gums and cause tooth decay. When gums become diseased, they begin to recede and trap more bacteria. This can lead to the loss of a tooth. It is important to clean between teeth every day to prevent the bacteria from building up.

Though it does not matter when you floss your teeth, or if it occurs before or after brushing, some prefer to floss at night for a cleaner mouth while sleeping. Overnight, our mouths dry out which causes bacteria to thrive.

Floss should only be used once, and while flossing, make sure to use a new section of the floss for each space. Re-using floss could actually introduce more bacteria into your mouth.

When flossing, make sure to scrub both sides of each space and do not skip any spaces. The molars are the main chewing teeth, so though they are far back and easy to skip, they should receive special attention.

Dental Bonding with Dr. Michael Kim at Alta Loma Dental Care

If you live in Alta Loma, CA and have cracks or gaps in your teeth, you might want to consider a dental bonding treatment to restore your smile. Dr. Michael Kim has become the go-to local dentist for bonding procedures. Unlike veneers, which are manufactured in a laboratory and require a customized mold, bonding can be done in a single visit.

The procedure for dental bonding is non-invasive and quite simple. Patients are not required to be sedated for the procedure. Dr. Kim will utilize a shade guide in the beginning to match the resin color to the natural color of your teeth so it looks perfectly natural. Dental bonding is not just used to repair teeth that are cracked or damaged, it is also used to:

  • Repair damaged teeth

  • Improve discoloration of teeth

  • Change the shape of teeth

After selecting the proper shade, Dr. Kim will begin the bonding process. It begins with abrading or roughening the surface of the tooth. The tooth will then be coated lightly with a conditioning liquid. This liquid will help the bonding material adhere to the tooth. Once the tooth is prepared, Dr. Kim will simply apply the tooth-colored putty and mold it to the proper shape and size. The material is then hardened with an ultraviolet light. The final step is polishing the area to give you a fresh, vibrant smile.

Come on by Alta Loma Dental Care in Alta Loma, CA for your dental bonding procedure!

Dr. Michael Kim Promotes the Benefits of Regular Dental Cleanings

Preventative dentistry is one of the most important aspects of proper dental care. There are many forms of preventative dentistry, but the most effective practice is regular cleanings from a dentist. Dr. Michael Kim offers regular cleanings in order to keep his Alta Loma, CA dental patients’ teeth happy and healthy at his practice, Alta Loma Dental Care.

Regular dental cleanings are an extremely effective solution when it comes to the prevention of gum disease. It also allows patients the opportunity to have a brighter smile and it allows Dr. Kim the opportunity to find any type of dental disease from forming and developing into a bigger issue. While some might find regular cleanings unnecessary, it is the only way for your dentist to keep track of your oral hygiene in order to maintain a healthy mouth. Annual dental cleanings and exams allow Dr. Kim to identify problems and take care of them right away.

Combined with regular brushing and flossing, patients who attend regular check-ups are able to have the best combination of preventative dental care possible. Dental cleanings are an integral part of preventative dentistry because there are areas that cannot be reached with brushing and flossing alone. Poor periodontal health is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. The best treatment for periodontal disease is preventative care. Visiting your dentist at least twice a year will go a long way in preventing periodontal disease.

Periodontal cleanings and treatments are a necessity in order to keep the mouth healthy as well. Not only can your teeth be affected by unhealthy gums, but periodontal disease (gum disease) has been linked to heart health. When it comes to teeth health, it is important to make regular visits to your dentist in order to properly care for and protect your overall health.

Dr. Michael Kim of Alta Loma Dental Care Improves Smiles with Veneers

Dental veneers are thin ceramic shells that cover the tooth structure and create a more brilliant, beautiful smile. Many of our patients at Alta Loma Dental Care choose to have veneers placed on their teeth for a variety of reasons. They might cover teeth that are stained or misshapen or opt for veneers because they have gaps in their teeth or have teeth that are slightly misaligned.

Veneers are bonded securely over the teeth and match the other natural teeth, so they don’t appear obvious to anyone else. After the veneers have been bonded to your teeth, Dr. Michael Kim recommends following these post-op instructions:

  • Eat soft foods for the first few days

  • Don’t chew extremely hard foods like raw carrots, ice or candy, as the porcelain can start breaking away

  • Brush and floss the teeth with the veneers, just like your other natural teeth

  • Visit us at Alta Loma Dental Care every six months for a routine check-up and professional cleaning

Veneers can last a long time if patients follow these important instructions. If the gum begins to recede, they should return to our dental office in Alta Loma, CA for replacement veneers. This doesn’t usually happen for many years and is simply part of the aging process. To find out more about veneers, contact us today.

Alta Loma Dental Care Restores Smiles with Dental Implants

If you are missing teeth or are in need of an extraction due to disease decay or injury, dental implants provide an attractive and long-lasting solution for filling the gaps in your smile. While there is other options for replacing missing teeth, bridges require alteration to adjacent teeth and dentures are not permanent. Dental implants, on the other hand, can not only last you a lifetime but also look and feel natural. At Alta Loma Dental Care, Dr. Michael Kim utilizes dental implants to help you achieve a complete smile that you can be proud of.

The implant process can take between three to six months to complete, and the first step in the process is to implant a titanium screw, which will serve as the replacement tooth root, in your jaw bone through an incision in your gums. The gums are then sutured, and the jaw bone is left to heal around the implant. This process is called osseointegration, and while it takes place, you may receive a temporary crown for easier speaking and eating.

Once the jaw has healed, an abutment will be placed on top of the implant to serve as the foundation on which your permanent crown will be fixed. The tooth restoration is then custom made for your mouth and is either fixed or cemented in place so that you may enjoy a complete smile that looks and feels natural.

Bone Grafting Procedures Available for Alta Loma, CA Dental Patients

If you need restoration procedures, such as implants, you may first require bone grafting. In some situations, your jawbone may be too soft or not thick enough to support a dental implant. Bone loss in the jaw typically is caused by periodontal disease. That’s where bone grafting can help.

Dr. Michael Kim has experience performing various types of oral surgery including bone grafts at Alta Loma Dental Care. The procedure involves removing small amounts of bone from another area of the body, such as the hip. Bone fragments can also be retrieved from an area of the mouth, which was drilled. In some cases, cadaver bone can be used.

After the bone is retrieved, it is placed on top of your existing bone in a procedure called grafting. The procedure builds up the bone in the jaw area and increases the chances of success when placing an implant or other type of restoration.

In addition to bone grafting, Alta Loma Dental Care also offers other types of oral surgery including extractions. We also offer cosmetic and preventative dentistry. If you are looking for outstanding customer service with an exemplary reputation, consider Alta Loma Dental Care.

Enamel Erosion and Fluoride in Alta Loma, CA

Tooth enamel is the semi-translucent, hard, outer layer of the teeth, and although it is the strongest substance in the human body, it is not impervious to everyday wear and tear or acid erosion. Tasked with protecting our teeth from the daily damage of biting and chewing, as well as from the temperature extremes of hot and cold foods, tooth enamel is important for keeping our teeth free of decay and pain. But if the enamel begins to erode, intervention is necessary for protecting your oral health.

Tooth enamel erosion can be caused by a number of factors, from drinking too many soft drinks or fruity juices to not cleaning your teeth often enough. Other contributing factors include eating lots of sour foods or candy, dry mouth, acid reflux disease, bulimia, teeth grinding, heaving drinking and even brushing teeth immediately after consuming acidic food or beverages. When the tooth enamel erodes, you may experience sensitive teeth, irregular or rough tooth edges, yellowed teeth and cupping or dents.

At our practice in Alta Loma, CA, Dr. Michael Kim recommends fluoride treatment to strengthen teeth and prevent decay. Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in our water and many of our foods and can help remineralize tooth enamel that has eroded and protect it from acid in the future. Especially important to children between the ages of 6 and 16, fluoride treatment is a common part of dentistry. The mineral can be applied as a foam, gel or varnish and is a much stronger dose than found in toothpastes and mouthwashes.

Dr. Kim can determine if fluoride treatment is right for you. If erosion has already gone too far, however, it may be necessary to use bonding to protect the teeth. Schedule an appointment by calling (909) 987-6268. For more information, visit www.altalomadentalcare.com.

Benefits of Digital X-rays

Dental technology has improved greatly over the years, enhancing every step of dental care, from diagnosis to treatment. New technology has even made dental X-rays safer and more convenient, and many dentists have adopted digital radiography to view their patients’ teeth. At Alta Loma Dental Care, we have many state-of-the-art technologies, including digital X-rays, to provide our patients in Alta Loma, CA with the best dental care available.

Digital X-rays are taken in a similar manner to traditional X-rays that use film, but rather than placing film in the patient’s mouth, a digital sensor is used. This sensor is connected to an imaging program on a computer that projects the image, allowing Dr. Michael Kim to view your teeth more closely and with better accuracy than traditional dental X-rays. Better images mean that there is a greater chance that the dentist will spot potential problems and be able to fix them before they become more serious or possibly more painful. In addition to better accuracy, digital radiography produces 90 percent less radiation than regular film X-rays, granting peace of mind to those who take X-rays frequently.

Whichever treatment you’re receiving at our practice, from a regular check-up to dental implants, we will strive to provide you with the best service with the most up-to-date technology.

Cold Sore Treatment at Alta Loma Dental Care

Cold sores can be painful, uncomfortable and embarrassing, but at our office Alta Loma, CA, we can help you get rid of the herpetic lesion with laser dentistry. Treatment with a diode laser is quick and does not require an anesthetic, allowing you to easily treat cold sore symptoms.

If you are treated with a laser during the tingling stage that occurs before a breakout, you can reduce or even eliminate cold sore symptoms before they start. If you are already experiencing a breakout, the laser can still effectively treat your cold sore, offering pain relief and accelerated healing.

The laser provides effective treatment by killing the viral particles of the cold sore, which not only helps heal the lesion but can also decrease the frequency at which they reoccur in that area. Several treatments can decrease the frequency of cold sores and lessen symptoms during the breakouts that do occur. We have had great results with laser treatment in our office, with many patients and non-patients experiencing great relief.

If you would like to receive treatment, you can schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Kim by calling (909) 987-6268. For more information about the procedure or Alta Loma Dental Care, visit www.altalomadentalcare.com.

Dr. Michael Kim and Intraoral Cameras

Dental technology has greatly improved the diagnosis of dental issues over the years, making early treatment of decay, infection and disease possible. With advancements such as intraoral cameras, dentists can view patients’ teeth more easily and more accurately. This helps them diagnose dental issues earlier and treat them with less invasive methods. At our office in Alta Loma, CA, our patients’ oral health is important to us, so we use intraoral cameras and other top-of-the-line technology to keep them smiling.

The intraoral camera is an effective tool for viewing patients’ teeth and mouth from different angles, allowing Dr. Michael Kim to see the mouth from a variety of angles—many of which weren’t even available as little as a couple years ago. The camera is connected to a monitor that lets the dentist see the structures of his patient’s teeth more closely and with better accuracy than traditional methods.

These digital images also allow the patient and insurance companies to see what the doctor has seen, which lets you understand your oral health better and gain procedure acceptance from your insurance company more easily. In addition, by using digital intraoral cameras and digital X-rays instead of traditional dental X-rays, your dentist can limit your exposure to radiation.

Does Your Tooth Still Hurt After a Root Canal? Dr. Michael Kim Can Help

If you’re still experiencing pain after a root canal, you may be wondering why. Aren’t root canals meant to take your pain away? There are many reasons why your tooth may still be hurting. It is possible that the base of your tooth root (periapical) is still slightly tender or that your pain is caused by a temporary filling that is a bit too high. In these cases, taking OTC painkillers, preferably ibuprofen, may be all you need to alleviate your pain while your root canal heals.

However, if you’ve had a root canal at our practice in Alta Loma, CA and are still experiencing pain that is severe or persistent, you should call our office immediately. The dentist may need to prescribe you an antibiotic to make sure the infection does not remain, or she may need to perform retreatment.
At your follow-up appointment, Dr. Michael Kim will want to know what type of pain you are experiencing. Is your tooth sensitive to hot and cold? Is it the tooth root that is sensitive or the gums that are over the tooth? Is it a constant ache, or does it only hurt when biting? Is there any swelling, drainage or pus? The answers to these questions will give Dr. Kim the information he needs to diagnose your pain.

Root canals don’t always work, and there are many reasons for this, including fractures of the root, convoluted or twisted root structures and failure to protect the root canal after the procedure. If this occurs, you may need further treatment. If the root canal was successful, it should feel normal most of the time.

Dr. Michael Kim Restores Patients Smiles with Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are two procedures that use the tooth structure as a base for restoration. Often called partial crowns, both inlays and onlays strengthen the tooth while restoring its shape and prevent further damage or decay. At our office in Alta Loma, CA, we use these procedures to repair teeth when decay is too extensive to support a filling but not extensive enough to use a crown.

When there is no damage to the cusps of a tooth, Dr.  Michael Kim uses an inlay for restoration, bonding it right on top of the tooth structure. Made of porcelain, inlays are both strong and natural-looking, providing an attractive solution for repairing your tooth. Dr. Kim uses onlays when damage is a little more extensive and repairs to the cusp of the tooth are required.

Inlays and onlays can be created at a lab out of porcelain, gold or composite resin. Fabrication normally takes between two to three weeks, and during that time, you will be provided with temporary restorations. Once your permanent restorations are ready, they will be cemented in place.

To ensure that your teeth get the best dental care available, schedule an appointment at Alta Loma Dental Care by calling (909) 987-6268. For more information, visit www.altalomadentalcare.com.

Dental Crowns in Alta Loma, CA

From the acid erosion caused by the food you eat to the constant biting, crunching and grinding you do when eating or stressed, daily activities weaken your teeth and make them more susceptible to decay, cracks, discoloration and more. If any of your teeth reach a point where they become so weak or decayed that the tooth structure becomes compromised, a crown can be used to protect and reinforce it. By covering a weak or broken tooth and restoring it to its original size and shape, a crown reduces pain and saves the tooth from needing to be extracted, and in Alta Loma, CA, Dr. Michael Kim can determine if a crown is needed to save your smile.

Made from porcelain, gold or porcelain fused to metal, crowns are used to repair teeth when fillings or bonding are not enough. When you have a crown placed, Dr. Kim will first prepare your tooth by removing any existing decay and insulating the tooth nerve with core buildup. Besides providing insulation, the core buildup also serves as a surface for the crown to bond to. Once the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken so that the crown can be created to fit perfectly. Then at your next appointment, the custom crown is cemented onto the current tooth to prevent further decay and fracture.

Straight teeth play a big part in creating a beautiful smile, but they are also important for overall oral health. If you have crooked, crowded or misaligned teeth, correcting them can prevent dental issues from developing in the future. There are several options available for straightening your teeth, including Invisalign, and at our office in Alta Loma, CA, Dr. Michael Kim can help you achieve a smile you can be proud of with quality orthodontics.

Bridges in Alta Loma, CA

If you’ve had one tooth or multiple teeth extracted due to damage, decay or disease, it is important to have the resulting gap filled or your remaining teeth can shift out of position and become susceptible to further decay. One way to replace your missing tooth or teeth and prevent this shifting in Alta Loma, CA is with a dental bridge.

Called a bridge because a prosthetic tooth is suspended between two crowns to fill in the missing space, this natural-looking tooth structure is usually made from gold, metal, alloys or porcelain to ensure a strong and durable smile that can last for many years.

The process of creating a bridge usually takes two visits to our office. During your first visit, Dr. Michael Kim will create abutments out of the existing teeth on both sides of your gap. This is where the bridge’s crowns will be attached. After the abutments are in place, a mold is made of your mouth for creating the bridge, which will fit and feel as close to your natural teeth as possible. While you wait for the bridge to be fabricated in the lab, you will receive a temporary device for your convenience. Then, once the permanent device is completed, you will return Alta Loma Dental Care to have the crowns fixed to the abutments with an adhesive. The pontic between the crowns forms the bridge and replace your missing tooth or teeth.

Night Guards from Alta Loma Dental Care

At our practice in Alta Loma, CA, we see many patients who suffer from bruxism, or teeth grinding. While many people who grind their teeth do so consciously throughout the day, even more grind their teeth at night while sleeping. Bruxism can cause damage to your enamel, as well as cause jaw pain, headaches and gum irritation, so it is important to treat it. Night guards are usually the best way to prevent grinding’s negative effects.

Similar to mouth guards worn by athletes during sports, night guards provide a barrier between your top and bottom teeth when you sleep. By reducing wear to your teeth and making it harder for you to grind, your teeth will be healthier and you will feel better overall. We custom fit these night guards to make them as comfortable as possible. If you are a night grinder, we will take an impression of your teeth and have a mouth guard created in our dental lab. These guards are very durable and can last for up to 10 years.

If you find yourself frequently waking up with headaches or pain in your jaw, it is very possible that you grind in your sleep. Often those who do not treat their bruxism end up with TMD, which can lead to a change in the appearance of their faces. To diagnose and treat your night grinding, call (909) 987-6268 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Kim. For more information about Alta Loma Dental Care, visit www.altalomadentalcare.com.

Dr. Michael Kim and Laser Dentistry

The introduction of lasers into the field of dentistry has drastically improved the way that certain procedures are performed. Allowing for less invasive, faster and essentially painless procedures, lasers improve the dental experience for both the dentist and our patients. While laser dentistry has only been embraced by about 7 percent of practicing dentists, Dr. Michael Kim utilizes this technology to bring countless rewards to our patients in Alta Loma, CA.

At Alta Loma Dental Care, Dr. Kim uses lasers to sterilize and restore gum tissue, perform root desensitization and treat canker sores and cold sores. Dr. Kim highly recommends laser bacterial reduction for decontaminating gums before cleaning appointments. This allows the dental cleaning to be more effective by preventing infection and protecting your teeth. Additionally, lasers provide an ideal treatment for apthous ulcers (canker sores) and Herpes 1 (cold sores). Lasers can accelerate healing, reduce pain and even prevent the sore from appearing if caught in the tingling, burning stage. Laser dentistry is also great for desensitizing sensitive roots that are causing discomfort for the patient.

When treating gum disease, ulcers or sensitive teeth, lasers improve the effectiveness of many dental procedures while also increasing the patient’s comfort. To schedule an appointment, call (909) 987-6268. For more information about our office and its services, please visit www.altalomadentalcare.com.
