The Whys and Hows of Partial Crowns

At Alta Loma Dental Care, we provide our patients with new crowns and full implants to replace teeth that have been lost or are so decayed they need to be extracted. But what about teeth which are too damaged to be fixed with a small filling, but still have a healthy base? When the chewing surface of a molar or premolar is damaged, we have a type of restoration called inlays or onlays, also known as partial crowns, which can restore its function.

The difference between an inlay and an onlay is that an inlay is nestled in between the cusps (the pointy parts of the surface), while an onlay replaces both the cusps and the indentation. The doctors will need to remove damaged parts of the teeth, possibly by using one of our surgical lasers, and then make an impression of the patient’s mouth. The patient may be given an artificial crown to wear during the few weeks it will take to prepare the permanent partial crown. The most common material to use is porcelain, which has to be milled at a factory, although patients may inquire about glass resin or gold options. Completed inlays or onlays are attached with dental cement, and patients will thereafter take care of their restoration in the same way they should take care of natural teeth.
